The NC Dinos rode a strong pitching performance from Choi Sung-young and three long balls to a second consecutive winning series.
The Dinos won the eighth game of the season against Samsung 7-1 at Lions Park in Daegu on Monday to complete a two-game sweep of the series after losing the first game. With the win, NC evened its record against Samsung at 4-4 this season.
The difference in the batting order was the difference in the game.
Samsung took the early lead.
A day after failing to capitalize on their chances with nine hits and two walks.
They took the lead in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Kim Ji-chan and Pirela put runners on first and third with nobody out, and Kim Dong-yeop lifted the first pitch for a sacrifice fly to bring in the third run.
But that was it. The previous day's lack of offense continued in the second inning. Until the fifth inning, they had runners on base in every inning on seven hits and four walks, but couldn't capitalize.
In the meantime, the NC bats came through with three long balls at crucial moments.
In the top of the second inning, with runners on first and second after two walks, Ahn Jung-yeol doubled down the left field line and scored on an error by the left fielder to make it 2-1.
After a leadoff walk to Kwon Hee-dong to make it 2-1 in the top of the fourth, Jason Martin drew a full count against Hwang Bong-jae and lifted a 143-kilometer fastball over the right field fence for a two-run home run. It was his third home run of the season to make it 4-1.
Two batters later in the sixth, Ahn Jung-yeol hit his second solo home run of the season to left field to make it 5-1. NC drove in a run in the top of the seventh when Seo Ho-cheol led off with a double and Kwon Hee-dong followed with a single.
NC starter Choi Sung-young threw 84 pitches in five innings, allowing one run on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts to extend his win streak to four games without a loss this season.
Ahn Joong-yeol, who wore the starting mask for the first time in five games since the Jamsil LG Electronics game on Feb. 2, led the way with a strong offensive performance. He minimized runs with a steady lead and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning by throwing out the speedy Kim Ji-chan at second base. No. 2 Ho-Cheol Seo was the table-setter with his fifth three-hit game of the season. Martin picked up where he left off the day before, going 3-for-4 with a home run and a multi-hit game.
Samsung had runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh inning, but back-to-back super catches by NC shortstop Kim Han-byul and third baseman Park Seok-min prevented them from rallying. Samsung was unable to find a solution on July 7 and 8, scoring just one run on 18 hits.
